About the Workshop
Award winning artist Timothy Rees brings his years of experience working daily from live models as well as photographs to teach participants the keys to successful portrait painting from photographs.
Using their own references, or ones provided by Timothy, attendees can expect to learn the key concepts Timothy considers when painting a portrait, including anatomy, color, and paint application.
- How to overcome unclear drawing deficiencies in photographs.
- How to create believable and stronger colors, even when the photograph is unclear or lacking.
- How to create more dimension and volume than a photograph.
In short, how to avoid making a painting that looks like a flat photograph, and instead looks like a vibrant and lifelike portrait painting.
The workshop begins with a day of drawing as Timothy explores the nuances of contours, highlight and subordinate anatomy, and translates the photograph to prepare for painting. The next day, participants will explore concepts of color mixing for flesh tones, and discuss deficiencies in photographs as well as how to compensate for them as needed, then commence their paintings. On the third day, participants will bring their portrait to near completion while addressing concepts such as paint application to add a level of depth and interest not present in photographs. The workshop will conclude the fourth day with the development and successful integration of the background, and final touches to the portrait
to bring it to completion. Participants will not only walk away with stronger portrait painting skills, but the ability to utilize photographs as a tool to make vibrant, lifelike paintings.

About Timothy Rees
Timothy Rees is an American portrait artist. He began his art journey by moving to Chicago in 2009 to paint in the open studios of the Palette and Chisel Academy. After one year he joined the staff of instructors, and soon began teaching workshops locally and abroad. In 2012 he moved to Scottsdale, where he later created and taught a classical art program for the Scottsdale Artist School. In 2017 he opened an atelier, where between 10 and 15 apprentices studied under him at any given time. In 2020 he moved to Iowa, where he painted in his downtown studio. Throughout his decade of painting he has appeared in numerous publications such as Fine Art Connoisseur, International Artist, Southwest Art, and American Art Collector. He has won various awards, including first place in Portrait Society of America’s Members only Competition, Art Renewal Center’s Gallery Award, FASO’s Bold Brush award, and People’s Choice Award in the SAS Beaux Arts Show and P&C Gold medal show. He has filmed two instructional videos with Streamline Publishing, and has created a comprehensive remote atelier training program with textbooks and dozens of instructional videos, for those unable to attend a traditional atelier.
Timothy paints a range of subjects and in various techniques, but is best known for his loose all prima portraits, striking life-size figure paintings, and naturalistic outdoor figure paintings of women and children. While some of his work has a narrative or a message, he says the most important thing with his paintings is to add to the inherent beauty of the world while visually exploring the experiences that unite humanity.
