July Chat & Challenge – Focus on the Features
Tuesday July 30 at 7pm
Through either drawing or painting ONLY the features, the goal for this month is a better understanding of the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth.
Features are unique to the individual but become even more of a challenge to reproduce when viewed from different perspectives, and in different lighting scenarios. Using reference material (a model, photos, master paintings, or yourself in a mirror) study the features from different viewpoints: straight on, oblique, from above, from below. Observe the angle of the ears, where and how they attach in relation to the jawline and muscles of the neck; how the direction of the eyeballs affect the drape and folds of the lids; discover how the nose is uniquely shaped by both bones and cartilage; how the lips follow the skull and muscle structures; and more.
Don’t focus on a completed portrait for this Zoom Chat Challenge but take some time to study the features from different perspectives and make some quick sketches or color studies.
