September 27-29, 2021, Jon deMartin Workshop

NEW DATE: September 27-29, 2021
ONLINE: via Zoom

FOCUS: Portrait Drawing—Methods & Materials of the Baroque & 18th Century

In this three-day workshop we’ll be concentrating on drawing the portrait in the mediums and techniques that are consistent with the Renaissance, Baroque and 18th Century tradition. This workshop will emphasize the importance of drawing as the root of all classical art.

This workshop’s goal is to draw a well-proportioned and well-constructed head that shows a secure understanding of the model’s construction in both line and light and shade. Lectures and demonstrations will be given to lead the students through each step, with a clear and logical process of their drawing.

We’ll explore the materials and paper choices available to the artist for their personal goals. Since the class is online, the self-portrait or another sitter available to you will be our subject. If the student owns a plaster cast* of a head, or mask from antiquity, that can also be our subject. We’ll also review the importance of being familiar not only with the overall construction of the head but also its individual features.

For a deeper look into drawing the head and its construction we recommend Jon’s book: Drawing Atelier—the figure: how to draw in the classical style.
